Almus 'Patient Safety Award' for pharmacy won by 'Have a Safe Day' programme
30 November 2006

Almus Pharmaceuticals is pleased to announce that Peter Glover MRPharmS, Pharmacy Superintendent, Day Lewis plc., has won the Almus Patient Safety Award in pharmacy 2006. Peter Glover's entry appealed to the judges due to exceptional analysis of the causes of dispensing errors plus 'Patient Safety Initiative Programme', a series of practical recommendations to prevent future errors.

The award was presented by Ornella Barra, Wholesale and Commercial Affairs Director, Alliance Boots, at the UniChem Pharmacy Awards held on 10 November 2006 at The Marriot Hotel, London.

The Almus 'Patient Safety Award' in pharmacy applauds best practice and innovation with entries demonstrating the extensive expertise and practical insight available in UK pharmacies for patients - where and when it matters.

The award entry submitted by Peter Glover MRPharmS, recognises that patient safety in pharmacy is a compound issue, needing to reflect on a wide range of areas. The 'Patient Safety Initiative Programme' was selected by judges as 'an example of good practice that should be the standard in all pharmacies and is to be highly commended', 'a fantastic approach to patient and staff safety'.

Leading from the top to engage all staff, including locums and pre-reg students, patient safety training forms an integral part of the programme that promotes a positive 'Have a Safe Day' approach to patient care. The culture of 'safety first' highlights the benefits of sharing near misses within a no blame culture - achieved through on-screen reporting, a monthly correspondence column and up-to-the minute bulletin board to communicate immediate action points. A patient safety logo 'Have a Safe Day', has been designed to be included on all stationery used in programme including posters and badges.
